Theme Installation

Slush Child Theme requires the parent theme Genesis Framework. You need to install first the Genesis Framework in order for the Slush theme to work. You can get the Genesis Framework at http://www.studiopress.com/themes/genesis.

Here are some instructions on how to install the theme on your WordPress site. The instructions assumed that you already have Genesis Framework installed.

Installation via WP Dashboard:
  1. Unzip the Slush package file. ( Slush_theme_package_v1.0 )
  2. Go to Appearance -> Themes,
  3. Click "Add New", choose "Upload",
  4. Then find Slush.zip file on your computer. The file is inside the extracted folder of the package ( Slush_theme_package_v1.0 folder). and press Install Now,
  5. After that activate the theme,
  6. Then go to Genesis -> Slush Settings and set the options.
Common Theme Installation Issues:

"The package could not be installed. The theme is missing the style.css stylesheet.", this means you uploaded a wrong zip file. Make sure you unzip the package and uploaded the right zip file.

"The parent theme could not be found.", this means Genesis framework was not yet installed.
Installation via FTP:
  1. Unzip the Slush package file. ( Slush_theme_package_v1.0 )
  2. In the extracted folder ( Slush_theme_package_v1.0 ), find ( Slush.zip ) and extract.
  3. Upload Slush folder into Themes folder in your WordPress installation (/wp-content/themes/) via FTP,

Importing XML File

XML file is included in the package if you want to have a quick setup of the theme.

To import XML file on WP:
  1. Go to Tools => Import, choose WordPress.
  2. Upload the XML file ( Slush.xml ) included in the package
  3. You have now all needed pages and post same as the demo.

Setting Up Homepage

  • To have a blog homepage, go to Settings -> Readings -> Front Page Displays -> Your Latest Posts.
  • To have a static front page, go to Settings -> Readings -> Front Page Displays -> Static Page. And select the page you want to set as frontpage

Widget Areas

The following are the widget areas of Slush theme.

  1. Header Right - It is the widget area in the header
  2. Primary Sidebar - It is the sliding sidebar on the theme.
  3. Portfolio Sidebar - Sidebar that appears on single portfolio page.
  4. Home Widget - Widget that appears on homepage right after the header. Best for showcasing a fullwidth slider.
  5. Home Before Loop - Widget that appears on homepage before the loop.
  6. Shop Sidebar - Sidebar that appears in woocommerce pages
  7. Footer 1 - Footer 1 Widget Area
  8. Footer 2 - Footer 2 Widget Area
  9. Footer 3 - Footer 3 Widget Area
  10. After Entry - Widget area in the single post after author section

Custom Widgets

The theme comes with custom widgets. You can see them in Apeparance -> Widgets.

  1. ZP - Post Box - Grid layout of posts items. You can select up to 3 different layouts
  2. ZP - Post Carousel - Displays post items in carousel mode
  3. ZP - Post Slider - Displays post items in a slider mode

How to Create Post with Post Format

Post Format is a WordPress feature where you can assign the post into a different format. Slush enabled this feature and styled accordingly. The following instructions will guide you how to set post formats and their settings.

Standard Post Format

This is the default format. There is no special settings in here.

  1. Create New Post.
  2. Fill in the Title.
  3. In the "Format" option, on the right side of your screen, select "Standard".
  4. Set the category, tags and featured image. Featured image is optional for standard post format. But it is best to have a featured image displayed.
  5. Then at the bottom of the Editor, fill in the default settings of Genesis framework, "Theme SEO Settings".
  6. Then "Publish".
Audio Post Format

Audio post format gives option to embed audio into your post.

  1. Create New Post.
  2. Fill in the Title.
  3. In the "Format" option, on the right side of your screen, select "Audio". Then "Audio Settings" will appear.
  4. In the "Audio Settings", you have the option to insert self hosted audio or embed audio.
  5. Set the category, tags and featured image. Featured image is required for this post format.
  6. Then at the bottom of the Editor, fill in the default settings of Genesis framework, "Theme SEO Settings".
  7. Then "Publish".
Video Post Format

Video post format gives option to embed video into your post.

  1. Create New Post.
  2. Fill in the Title.
  3. In the "Format" option, on the right side of your screen, select "Video". Then "Video Settings" will appear.
  4. In the "Video Settings", you have the option to insert self hosted video or embed video directly into the post.
  5. Set the category, tags and featured image. Featured image is required for this post format.
  6. Then at the bottom of the Editor, fill in the default settings of Genesis framework, "Theme SEO Settings".
  7. Then "Publish".
Quote Post Format

Quote post format is useful if you want to post some quotes and sayings.

  1. Create New Post.
  2. Fill in the Title, the title must be the author of the quote
  3. In the "Format" option, on the right side of your screen, select "Quote".
  4. Insert the quote in the editor
  5. Set the category and tags. Featured image is not necessary in this format.
  6. Then at the bottom of the Editor, fill in the default settings of Genesis framework, "Theme SEO Settings".
  7. Then "Publish".
Gallery Post Format

Gallery post format displays a list of images in a slideshow

  1. Create New Post.
  2. Fill in the Title
  3. Set the category, tags.
  4. In the "Format" option, on the right side of your screen, select "Gallery". And "Gallery Settings" will appear. Attach all the images you want to display for the gallery post format.
  5. Then at the bottom of the Editor, fill in the default settings of Genesis framework, "Theme SEO Settings".
  6. Then "Publish".
Link Post Format

Link post format is useful if you just want to share some links with your posts.

  1. Create New Post.
  2. Fill in the Title.
  3. In the "Format" option, on the right side of your screen, select "Link". Then "Link Settings" will appear.
  4. In the "Link Settings", you have to insert the link.
  5. Leave the content editor empty.
  6. Set the category, tags and featured image. Featured image is not required on this post format.
  7. Then at the bottom of the Editor, fill in the default settings of Genesis framework, "Theme SEO Settings".
  8. Then "Publish".
Image Post Format

Image post format is same as Standard post format but this requires to have image to show..

  1. Create New Post.
  2. Fill in the Title.
  3. In the "Format" option, on the right side of your screen, select "Image".
  4. Write your content in the editor.
  5. Set the category, tags and featured image. Featured image is required on this post format.
  6. Then at the bottom of the Editor, fill in the default settings of Genesis framework, "Theme SEO Settings".
  7. Then "Publish".

Portfolio

Setting Up Portfolio Items

Setting up portolio items is like an ordinary post except for the additional optiosn

  1. Fill the title
  2. In the content editor, place all the details reagrding on your portfolio. It can be a text, HTML, shortcode or images.
  3. Depends on your portfolio, you can create a portfolio category and assign the portfolio items to it.
  4. In showcasing a portfolio, image is necessary so you must set a featured image. The featured image will be used to showcase your porfolio in the frontend.
  5. Below the editor you can see "Portfolio Settings". That option will determine how your portfolio in the frontend works.
    • "Lightbox" - this means that when your portfolio is clicked, a lightbox will open and show the bigger image/full image of your portfolio. The lightbox could be an image, image slider or a video. Priority will be the video if the video option is not empty, then the slider image when you set multiple images and lastly the image, which shows the featured image.
    • "External Link" - in some cases, portfolio may be linked to external link. Fill the "Portfolio External Link" option with your link.
    • "Single Page" - when selecting this option, the portfolio link will go to single portfolio page. In the single portfolio page, you can showcase a video, a list of image or just an image. Then the content in the editor will be shown as well as the related portfolio.

Page Template

Slush has 4 page templates: Default Template, Archive, Blog and Masonry

  1. "Default Template" - the default Genesis page template.
  2. "Archive" - the default Genesis archive template.
  3. "Blog" - the default Genesis blog template.
  4. "Masonry" - the custom page template intended to display masonry layout for posts and portfolio. Example Masonry Blog and Masonry Portfolio

    When "Masonry" layout is selected, an option "Masonry Template Settings" will appear. Set the option to your preferred settings.

Theme Settings

Theme settings can be found in Appearance -> Customize. Available option/settings for the theme are the following:

  1. Header/Top Logo Option - Appearance -> Customize -> Site Identity
  2. Header Layout - Appearance -> Customize -> Site Layout -> Header Layout.
  3. Body Font Option - Appearance -> Customize -> Body Style.
  4. Heading Font Option - Appearance -> Customize -> Heading Style.
  5. Accent Color Option - Appearance -> Customize -> Accent Colors.
  6. Footer Logo and Site Credits - Appearance -> Customize -> Footer Settings.
  7. Blog Options - Appearance -> Customize -> Blog Settings.

Customizing the Theme

The theme included the following file for customization.

  1. custom.css - this file is intended for CSS customization. If you want to change, add or override the existing theme style, place all your CSS here.
  2. custom_functions.php - this file is intended for adding some PHP codes. If you want to add filter and functions to the theme, you can place it here.

In this way, the code you added will not be overwritten if there's an update to the theme.
